Hands on: Acer beTouch E210

The Acer beTouch E210 manages the rare feat of pairing up a touchscreen with full QWERTY keyboard. We just gave it a quick once-over at the firm’s Mobile World Congress booth – keep reading for our initial thoughts.

Like all the other new smartphones from Acer (the liquidmini, Liquid mt, Iconia Smart), the Acer beTouch E210 is supremely solid in your hand – a world away from the plasticky bodies of some rival phones.

While the 2.6-inch screen doesn’t afford the crispness and sheer size of stablemates like the Liquid mini, it’s big enough to work well as a touchscreen. You can flick through pages and tap icons with minimal fuss.

Then there’s the keyboard, which is large and well-spaced. Ideal for text, IM and email addicts who just don’t like using touchscreens to type, in other words.

The Android 2.2 Froyo operating system offers access to thousands of apps, too, so unlike some QWERTY mobiles, you’re not restricted on the software front. Good to know.
