Couple arrested for contraband lizards (gecko) RM 3 Million

Bukit Kayu Hitam: A husband and wife arrested after smuggling 57 lizard gecko stored in the bamboo was estimated at RM3 million in an express bus at Kilometre 1.3, Highway Bukit Kayu Hitam, Changlun, yesterday.

In the operation at about 12:45 that afternoon, a team of Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) Kedah couple arrested his 30's way back from Hatyai to Kuala Lumpur.

It is understood, gecko lizards weighing over 300 grams can be sold at prices ranging from RM50, 000 to RM80, 000 each.

It is believed to cure Aids.

Kedah UPP Commander, Jasri Mohd Othman, said making a routine check on the route before an express bus stop in the journey from Hatyai to Kuala Lumpur through the Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) here.

The findings of the 57 lizard gecko found in the bamboo is placed in storage of goods in the bus.

The couple claimed the animals had to be brought back to Kuala Lumpur for medical purposes, he said.
